When it comes to shape-shifting thespians, there’s no one more extreme than British actor Christian Bale. From emaciated to super buff – this guy’s done it all. Still, Bale’s most dramatic weight shift was probably his transformation into skeleton-thin Trevor Reznik in the 2004 psychological thriller The Machinist.
According to the BBC, at first, Bale visited a nutritionist for advice and dropped down to the weight she suggested. However, this wasn’t enough, and he decided to lose a further 20 pounds. In total, Bale shed more than 60 pounds for the role, plunging from his regular weight of 185 pounds to a gaunt 121.
To make things worse, straight after The Machinist, he had to prepare for his role as Batman in Batman Begins. As a result, his weight shot up to 220 pounds – in five months! And when filming started, he was back down to 180 pounds.
Below 50 cent makes a dramatic weight loss (dropped a shocking 54 lbs) for a Movie role about his best friend who battled cancer.
Tom Hardy made the Transformation from small guy to big bad Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises"
Tom Hardy – who’s only 5’9” and naturally slender – has put on huge amounts of muscle for several high-profile movies, most notably Bronson, Warrior and The Dark Knight Rises.
Hardy gained 42 pounds for the role of hard man prisoner Charles Bronson, telling ShortList, “Bronson was fun… I just ate chocolate and pizza, lifted Pnut [his personal trainer] up and down the stairs, played Xbox, shaved my head, and grew a moustache.” Apparently, he also sweated through 2,500 pushups daily for over a month – but hey, no sweat… we do that too. Ahem.
To play Tommy Riordan in the 2011 movie Warrior, Hardy had to complete an insane training routine for eight weeks. His daily workout lasted for 10 hours and included various martial arts, weight training and choreography. Whew!
Hardy also put on 30 pounds of pure muscle in just four months for his role as terrifying villain Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. Sadly, though, beefing up in size didn’t help him build any height, and he had to wear three-inch platform shoes so that he could see eye to eye with Batman. Bless.
2012, Lost star Matthew Fox dropped 44 pounds to transform himself into serial killer Picasso for the movie Alex Cross. Fox told The Mirror that he wanted to portray the Picasso’s fizzing energy by being “almost disturbingly vascular and tendony.” Looking at the results, he certainly achieved the look.
And yet it all paid off, because when he saw the movie, Fox revealed, “I could hardly even believe it was me. But, it was exactly what I wanted to look like.”
Matthew Fox goes through some Major Muscle and fat Loss during rigorous training and strict high protein diet with low carbs and dehydration to achieve a menacing ripped scary condition for his movie roll.
